Although known for the Alamo, the River Walk, and excellent Tex-Mex food, San Antonio, Texas, has plenty of natural beauty. It’s just a matter of finding these hidden gems. Keep reading to learn more about four natural places in the San Antonio area that you can visit.

1. Japanese Tea Garden

The almost 100-year-old Japanese Tea Garden sits on a former rock quarry, and it underwent a massive renovation in 2008. Local residents donated flower bulbs, and the city nursery donated exotic plants to help beautify the area. Today, you can walk among the shaded walkways and head to the pavilion so you can gaze upon the 60-foot waterfall and ponds filled with koi fish. The waterfall area gives you a quiet and intimate location, and the garden has a small platform nestled in a thicket of bamboo.

Open daily from dawn until dusk, the gardens feature a lush year-round floral display and garden. What makes this place even more special is that admission is free.

2. Medina River Natural Area

Visit the Medina River Natural Area and see the stunning 511-acre property along with its 10 miles of hiking and biking trails. These trails wind through a variety of landscapes, allowing you to view towering pecan and cypress trees as well as honey mesquite and cacti. There are also numerous spots where you can enjoy world-class birding, including the green kingfisher, Audubon’s oriole, and the painted bunting.

If you want to check out nature, head to the Rio Medina Trail along the river and through the forest or take the Chaparral Trail along the river for six miles. However, the latter trail is not a loop, so you will have to hike back to where you started. You can bring your pets to this natural area as long as they’re on a leash.

3. Natural Bridge Caverns

Discovered by four college students in 1960, the Natural Bridge Caverns is now one of the state’s most popular attractions. The caverns offer numerous types of tours so you can experience the natural wonder at just about every turn. Check out its massive 60-foot natural limestone bridge, all while enjoying 70-degree temperatures inside the caverns. The Discovery Tour gives you a chance to see otherworldly formations created over time by single drops of water, while the Hidden Passages Tour highlights shadows created by massive formations.

4. San Antonio Botanical Garden

Located on Funston Place, the San Antonio Botanical Garden strives to inspire people to connect with plants while also understanding the role that plants have in their lives. Open daily, the garden offers a variety of cultural activities, community classes, camps, and school programs. More than 150,000 annual visitors enjoy the diverse and nationally recognized plant collection found on the grounds.

As the seventh-most populous city in the United States with more than 1.5 million residents, San Antonio features several hidden natural wonders worth checking out.
